take off that camera strap and win a pretty new one

Competition now closed – Thanks for all your wonderful entries!

One downfall of being the family photographer is that you will often end up missing out on being IN the shots.  We hear adults say “I hate having my picture taken” so many times on family portrait shoots.  That really is too bad because photography is not as much about vanity as it is about memory.  And if it really is a combination of vanity and memory for you, embrace blur and the healing brush in photoshop.  The point is, remember to be present in your children’s photographic memories of childhood…for them.

To encourage you to stop hiding behind the camera shield and to get a chance to “meet” our readers, we would like to run a contest!

To enter:

  1. Take a shot of you and your little one/s.  (No little ones?  Just you will be perfect.)
  2. Upload that photo to your corner of the internet (a blog, flickr, twitter, a public facebook page etc)
  3. Link back to beyond snapshots (using this url http://www.beyond-snapshots.com/blog) and tag the photo with ‘beyond snapshots’
  4. Come back here and let us know about it!  (Leave the link to your photo in the comment section so we can see it.)

At the end of the week we will pick the finalists, and put them all up here on the blog and start the voting. The image with the most votes will win their choice of gorgeous camera strap generously provided by:

To get you inspired, here are some photos of Rachel with her kids. If you have a remote, great. If not, there are a few ways to get the shot. Self timers, shooting into a mirror, or holding the camera out at arms length. Have fun and be creative. We can’t wait to meet you!

You have until Saturday evening (US time) to get the shots up for us to see and we will post the finalists next week.

This was back in October…not sure if that qualifies for the contest, but at least you know what I look like! (Well, when I have the time to scrub up, anyway.)

I have some of my family group photos, but I don’t have any photo of just me and my mom or just me and my dad. I guess they just never thought about to “create that memory” for me. Now, I enjoy being in the photos with my baby and I think she will love these pics of us when she grows up.

Here’s a newer photo of my daughter and myself. As I was looking through photos for this contest I found that I’m IN more pictures than I realized (although not nearly enough). This has inspired me to start taking more photos of myself with my daughter. Even if I think I look “awful” she needs these memories of us together.

i am so inspired by this post and getting myself into the shots WITH my kids. you are right–and i must learn–that it isn’t about me or my insecurities…it’s about documenting for my children. i had so much fun taking self portraits! i just can’t study them too much!

This is the one I had intended to post—my previous post just leads to lots of different pics–maybe that one can be deleted.

Now this was a challenge!! Trying to get my 17 month old to stay in front of the camera with me was near impossible, but we got some cute ones! This is so fun :)
